Suspension adjustments

I've got an 09 400xt and notice that when riding, I bump the ground quite a bit. I'm not talking nasty hard BANGS, just bumps. I do not see any damage to the frame underneath, so I don't think I'm doing damage. I do my best to avoid the nasty stuff.

This bike is my first ATV ever, so this could be the norm, however I find it annoying and don't think I should experience these "bumps" all the time. The trails I go on, are generally pretty smooth...I can usually go 20-30km/hr is most spots. I try my best to avoid hitting the underneath, but that takes all the fun out of it. I've talked to a few other riders, and they all say they don't bottom out on much except the obvious stuff.

I don't have my bike weighted down excessively, just me and a few essential tools (sockets, tow rope, tire repair kit, etc...)

My question... Should I try adjusting my suspension to give me more clearance? I noticed the suspension in front/rear appear to be adjustable and I think a tool came with the bikes tool kit.
I'm guessing the higher I adjust it, the stiffer the ride, but there's got to be a balance between height and comfort???
If I make changes, I'm also guessing that I should make identical adjustments to all 4 struts (2 x front and 2 x rear)

What's everyones thoughts on this?

I'm going to be invensting in a good skid plate as soon as I come up with the $$$, but I figure if I can get a little more clearance I'll increase my chances of causing some damage.

those shocks have only an adjustment for stiffer ride. those adjustments dont give you any ride height. start with the softest and work your self up to the stiffest. see what you like best. are you sure your fronts are adjustable? im not sure on a 400 if they are but if they are then adjust all four the same all the time and then if you like the setting in the front or rear leave that along and continue adjesting the other , to fine tune things. i believe you have like 5 settings or something like that?

So there's no way to adjust the ride height?
Almost every time I go over a bump, if I'm going any speed at all, the back end of the ATV bumps the ground. It's not a hard hit, but I definitely have to make sure I don't go fast.
I have to go a lot slower than everyone else I ride with or I keep bumping the ground.
would a stiffer shock in back help prevent that a bit?
There are 5 or 6 settings. As I turn it, it looks like it would compress the spring, which is why I thought it would give me a bit of height...

Hi ! On your 400 you can adjust rear shocks preload only: Stiffering preload helps your ground clearance too.

Front struts aren't adjustable, but if you want you can insert a pipe-lift under both front springs to preload fronts also.

I made it and I like it!

(anyone knows where I can buy the preload adjuster tool? )
