I was looking into purchasing a 2007 DS 90 for my son who is 9. He has never ridden a quad before and really wants on. So what I have read from reviews and peoples personal experience is that the 07 DS 90 has no power and requires a lot of mods just to get it trail ready. My question is I am not looking to do any mods or upgrades to the bike. My neighbors son has a 2003 polaris predator 90 and I know it will do 45 mph and has a lot of power stock. Is the 07 DS 90 a good bike or should I look into a Honda or Polaris 90?? I know it is kind of bias here being a can-am forum but I just want someones personal experience with the 90 cc quads. Thanks all

mgeorge23,
I think that in 2007 the DS90 was only available as a 4-stroker. The 4-strokers are slugs compared to the 2-stroke DS's (less rated torque, but yet heavier) and you heard correctly, they do require alot more $$$ to get them comparable in performance.

Second regarding your neighbors 2003 polaris predator 90, how do "you know it will do 45 mph" stock? Did you hit it with a radar gun, or clock it against something with a speedometer? Because in stock form mechanically they can't get anywhere near that speed due to gear box ratio, cvt ratio, tire size, sprocket ratio, stock CDI limited max engine RPM, etc... Heck, even a somewhat heavily modified 90 will struggle to get to 45...
In addition, they make less power then other's because the polaris come with an untuned exhaust system (glorified 4-stroke pipe on a two stroke).

Our old 05 DS90 2-stroker would walk all over most other 2-stroke 90's, my daughter won alot of kid's stock classes at the ATV dirt drags with it... The 4-strokers wheren't even in the same zip code on the track.

We went riding with them a couple months ago and his son was riding behind me and I was doing about 48mph on my renegade and he was right keeping pace with me. It was a very nice open stretch
on land. I may be off on the 45mph but it was darn close. I asked his dad what he had done to the bike and he said all he did was remove the jumper in the computer box which governs it down. So what you are telling me is to stay away from the 07 DS? I was looking into either the Predator 90 or a Honda TRX 90. I just have not herd a lot of good thing on the newer DS 90 unless I can find an older one like you have ( 2 stroke).

The reason I am skeptical is that while tuning sessions for super-stock TT racing, about the fastest I've ever seen a stock Predator 90 clocked on radar tapped all out with a tail wind, still using stock sprocket gearing, pipe, and 16mm carb with the limiter wire cut on the CDI was still only around 35 mph.
Like I said, mechanically it can't go much more, even mathmatically calculating the top speed at the max engine RPM... Also, the 90's with reverse gear boxes were geared even lower.

So having said that, that just sounds too unbelievable and he might just have the fastest stock Polaris 90cc on the planet then, or it's NOT stock and could just be screaming 12,000 RPM with a tiny rear sprocket, but regardless this isn't the purpose of your posting so moving on...

2-strokes are cheaper to modify and make more power with, and spare parts are plentiful as most of these asian mini's used the same jog scooter engine design.

All depends on what it is you are trying to accomplish and what you and your son are going to do with it. If you are just going to learn to trail ride, the 4-strokers are great because they are low maintenance.
We had great luck with our DS90 2-stroke as a beginner machine too, so I'd recommend it as well.
